Etna Top - trekking to the summit craters
Mount Etna Summit Crater Trekking from Etna South
Experience a unique adventure to the Mount Etna summit with a trek to the legendary Etna summit craters, an extraordinary journey designed for those who truly dream of reaching the top. This Etna summit crater trekking experience is one of the most complete and spectacular activities available on the volcano, allowing you to stand at the highest accessible point of Europe’s most active giant.
Departure is from Rifugio Sapienza (Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza), at about 1,900 m above sea level on the southern slope of the volcano. This is the main gateway to the summit craters from Etna South, the classic route to reach the upper areas of the volcano.
To begin the ascent, you will take the cable car followed by a 4x4 minibus, reaching approximately 2,900 m. From there, accompanied by a certified alpine/volcanological guide, you will continue on foot along a high-altitude trail toward the Etna summit, up to the highest permitted altitude depending on volcanic activity and safety regulations.
During the Etna summit crater trekking, you will approach the spectacular Mt Etna summit, observing the main active craters up close: Bocca Nuova, Voragine, Southeast Crater and Northeast Crater. This powerful experience allows you to witness the raw energy of the volcano and admire breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Sicily.
The descent takes place entirely on foot, crossing areas shaped by recent eruptions and secondary craters formed over time. Always accompanied by your guide, you will descend to about 2,500 m, where you will take the cable car back to the starting point.
This guided trek to the Mount Etna summit takes place in small groups and lasts approximately 6 hours. The excursion operates daily, weather and volcanic conditions permitting.
