Etna North: sunset from the summit areas

This Etna North tour is an experience designed for those who want to enjoy the sunset on Mount Etna from the northern slope, one of the most spectacular and least developed areas of the volcano. Etna North excursions take place aboard authorized off-road buses, accompanied by qualified Etna North guides with extensive knowledge of the area.

From Piano Provenzana, located at approximately 1,800 metres above sea level, the ascent begins along the northern slope of Mount Etna, crossing landscapes shaped by the most recent eruptions. During the route, a first panoramic stop is planned to observe buildings engulfed by lava, a direct testimony to the power of the volcano.

The tour continues with a visit to the “buttonhole” craters, formed during the eruption of 27 October 2002. Here, an Etna North trek begins among lava flows and explosive volcanic materials, at approximately 1,900 metres above sea level, offering a closer understanding of volcanic eruption dynamics.

Next, you will reach the Umberto and Margherita craters, located at approximately 2,380 metres, where a short hike along the crater rims is planned, always accompanied by the guides.

The Etna North tour continues to the Pizzi Deneri Volcanological Observatory. After leaving the vehicle, you will take a walk of approximately 15 minutes to the summit of Pizzi Deneri, at 3,000 metres above sea level, to admire one of the most spectacular high-altitude sunsets on Mount Etna, with views over the craters, the Ionian coast and the surrounding areas.

After approximately 2 and a half hours, the return journey takes place aboard the off-road buses back to the starting point at Piano Provenzana, completing a unique experience on the northern slope of Mount Etna.
